Baltic Birch Plywood

Baltic birch plywood from 3 to 13 ply, 1/8" to 3/4" thick, in 5' x 5' full sheets and 2'6" x 5' half sheets. An all-birch, multi-ply core that machines cleanly for cabinets, drawers, jigs and shop furniture.

Sizes, plies and thicknesses

Every thickness comes in both a 5' x 5' full sheet and a 2'6" x 5' half sheet:

  • 1/8" (3mm): 3 or 4 ply
  • 1/4" (6mm): 5 ply
  • 3/8" (9mm): 7 ply
  • 1/2" (12mm): 9 ply
  • 5/8" (15mm): 11 ply
  • 3/4" (18mm): 13 ply

Plan for metric thickness

Baltic birch is made to metric sizes, so "3/4 inch" is really 18mm, a little under a true 3/4" (19mm). Our sheets hold a thickness tolerance of ±0.5mm. Cut dadoes and grooves to the sheet you have, not to the fraction on the label, and measure a sample before you set up a run.

Plan for the square sheet

A full sheet is 5' x 5', not 4' x 8'. Lay out your parts on a 60" square: it often yields more drawer sides and cabinet parts than a 4' x 8' sheet, but long parts over 5' won't fit. If you need a 4' x 8' multi-ply birch sheet, ask about our white birch cabinet grade plywood in 9 and 13 ply.

Grade and glue

Our Baltic birch is 4B grade with interior glue. It's made for indoor work. For outdoor or wet locations, look at marine plywood and MDO instead.

Baltic birch plywood questions

What's the difference between Baltic birch and regular birch plywood?

Regular birch plywood is usually a 4' x 8' sheet with a birch face veneer over a core of fewer, thicker plies or MDF. Baltic birch is birch all the way through, with more and thinner plies, a 5' x 5' sheet and metric thicknesses. Choose regular birch plywood for a smooth paint- or stain-grade face at 4' x 8'; choose Baltic birch when the edges show or the part has to be strong and stable.

Is Baltic birch the same as Russian birch plywood?

The two names are used in the trade for the same kind of panel: all-birch, multi-ply, metric thickness, 5' x 5'. Our catalog lists it as Russian birch (Baltic birch).

Why is my 3/4" Baltic birch thinner than 3/4 inch?

Because it's made to 18mm, which is about 0.71". It's normal for this product, not a short sheet. Size your joinery to the actual thickness.

Can I use Baltic birch outdoors?

Not ours: it's made with interior glue. For outdoor and wet work, use marine plywood or MDO.

Where can I buy Baltic birch plywood near me in the St. Louis area?

At our St. Peters store in St. Charles County, where every ply count from 3 to 13 is regularly stocked in half and full sheets. Some people know us as St. Charles Hardwoods. For more than a few sheets, add them to your quote first so we can confirm the quantity; directions and hours are on Contact Us.

Will a sheet fit in my car?

Half sheets (2'6" x 5') fit in many SUVs and hatchbacks. A full sheet is 5' x 5', so for more than a few, bring a truck or trailer.
