Hardwood Plywood

Cabinet-grade hardwood plywood in walnut, white and red oak, maple, cherry, hickory, alder, birch, African mahogany and more, on veneer, MDF and combination cores. Sheets from 1/8" to 1-1/8" thick, mostly 4' x 8', some 4' x 10'.

Face species we stock

Pick the face veneer first, then the core and thickness. These are the species we regularly stock, with the cuts we carry:

  • Walnut: plain sliced, including a 3/4" veneer-core sheet with a no-splice face
  • White oak: plain sliced, and quartersawn in 1/4" and 3/4"
  • Red oak: rotary cut and plain sliced, from 1/8" to 1-1/8", plus quartersawn
  • Maple: hard maple, white maple (rotary cut) and Euro maple, 1/8" to 1-1/8"
  • Cherry: 1/8" to 3/4", on MDF and veneer cores
  • Hickory: plain sliced, 1/4" and 3/4"
  • Alder: premium (clear) and rustic (knotty)
  • Birch: natural and white, on veneer, MDF and classic cores
  • African mahogany, poplar and knotty pine
  • Aromatic cedar: 1/4", the usual choice for lining closets and chests

The product list above shows every combination of species, core, grade, thickness and sheet size. Several species have two or three products because the same face comes on different cores.

Reading the grade and the cut

Hardwood plywood grades are written as a letter and a number. The letter is the face: A is the best-matched, cleanest face, then B, C and D, which allow more color variation, small knots and patches. The number is the back: 1 is the best back, 4 the plainest. An A-1 sheet is good on both sides, for doors and open shelving. An A-4 or B-4 sheet saves money where only one side shows, such as cabinet backs.

The cut changes the look of the face:

  • Rotary cut peels the veneer off the log, giving a wide, wavy grain.
  • Plain sliced shows the familiar cathedral grain of solid lumber.
  • Quartersawn gives straight grain, and in oak the ray fleck that Arts and Crafts furniture is known for.

A few of our products note whole piece face (WPF), a face made from one veneer leaf rather than several spliced together.

Hardwood plywood questions

What plywood should I use for kitchen cabinets?

Most cabinet boxes are 3/4" veneer core, which is light, stiff and holds screws at the edges. Cabinet doors and flat panels are often MDF core, which stays flat and gives a smooth face for finishing. Pick an A face where it shows and a plainer back grade where it doesn't. Bring your plans and we'll help you choose.

Do you carry walnut plywood and white oak plywood?

Yes. Walnut comes plain sliced in 1/4" on MDF core and 3/4" on veneer core. White oak comes plain sliced in 1/4" and 3/4", and quartersawn in 1/4" and 3/4". Maple, cherry, red oak, hickory and alder are on the list above too.

What's the difference between hardwood plywood and Baltic birch?

Hardwood plywood has a decorative face veneer over a core, in 4' x 8' sheets, and is chosen for how the face looks. Baltic birch is birch all the way through, in 5' x 5' sheets, and is chosen for strength and clean edges.

Why are there two or three products for the same species?

Because the same face comes on different cores (veneer, MDF, combination), in different grades and thicknesses. Each is its own product so you can add exactly the right sheet to your quote.
